    The role will be based in Tokyo and you will be reporting to a Managing Director and a senior Vice President for the Securities Division Legal team in Asia.


    The Securities Division in Japan includes the fixed income, currencies and commodities (or FICC), equity and fund derivatives, sales and trading businesses (including cash equities, listed options, futures and facilitation) and Private Investor Products Group (including retail and wholesale structured products).


    Responsibilities include providing advice and guidance to our traders and sales people on a broad range of legal and regulatory matters across the Securities Division.


    Key responsibilities are as follows:

    • Advising on regulatory matters impacting the Securities Division (including global and local securities, banking and derivative regulations, such as, margin rules)
    • Provide legal advice to the Securities Division on securities, banking and derivative transactions and documentation
    • Leading negotiations on documentation relating to all aspects of the Securities Division business including structured derivatives confirmations, termsheets and securities offer documents
    • Preparing, maintaining and updating precedent legal documentation and agreements to incorporate changes in applicable law and regulations, Goldman Sachs policy or changes in market practice
    • Working with the Securities Division Compliance team on regulatory matters and investigations. There will also be opportunities to become involved in policy work, including representing the firm in discussions with industry bodies (in particular ISDA)
    • Liaise with Legal and Compliance personnel at Goldman Sachs globally on issues relating to the Securities Division
    • Assist in the preparation of materials for submission to the internal Goldman Sachs regional and global committees


    The role requires the ability to work independently and to manage a diverse and complex workload meeting tight deadlines.     Qualifications and Requirements:

    • Qualified Japanese law lawyers with minimum 10 years PQE (depending on the candidate’s skills, it can be less)
    • Relevant post-qualification experience either with a reputable law firm or as in-house counsel
    • An ability to demonstrate a strong grounding in Japanese regulations and research skills (experience with FIEA preferable)
    • International experience will also be an advantage
